Mervyn King, Baron King of Lothbury (2019)

Mervyn Allister King, Baron King of Lothbury KG GBE (born March 30, 1948 in Chesham Bois , Buckinghamshire , Great Britain ) was the Governor of the Bank of England from July 2003 to July 1, 2013 . Since July 2013 he has been a Life Peer ( Crossbencher ) of the British House of Lords .

Life

King studied economics at King's College at the University of Cambridge . He was later a visiting professor at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA . He received u. a. an honorary doctorate from the University of Abertay Dundee .

From 1984 to 1991 he was a professor at the " London School of Economics and Political Science ", then until 1997 chief economist at the "Bank of England", the British central bank . From 1997 to 2003 he was Deputy Governor and from July 2003 to June 2013 he was Governor of the UK Central Bank. On July 1, 2013, Mark Carney succeeded him as Governor of the Bank of England.

Together with the UK's Financial Supervisory Authority and the Treasury Department, he works for a liberal London financial center . Great Britain (as of 2011) is resisting pressure from numerous EU countries to introduce a financial transaction tax.

In May 2012, King warned of a "storm from the continent" in view of the Greek financial crisis . He processed his experiences with the financial crisis in the book The End of Alchemy: Money, Banking and the Future of the Global Economy , published in 2016 .

King married his long-time girlfriend on May 26, 2007 in Helsinki , the divorced Finnish entrepreneur Barbara Melander (* 1946). King is a fan of Aston Villa football club , owns a country estate near Canterbury and an apartment in Notting Hill .

On July 19, 2013, King was inducted into the House of Lords as a life peer with the title Baron King of Lothbury , of Lothbury in the City of London .
