Messiah (computer game)

Messiah is an action-adventure game developed by Shiny Entertainment and published by Interplay in 2000 . The game was advertised for its tessellation technology, which scales the number of polygons as required.

The cherub Bob is sent to earth by God to fight the rampant depravity. Bob realizes that Satan is responsible for the growing corruption.

Gameplay

The player sees the game from a pursuer's perspective . He controls the character Bob directly with the mouse and keyboard through the three-dimensional game world. The game tasks include firefights, small puzzles and jumping. In his original guise as a cherub, Bob is vulnerable and unable to cope with the chores. However, he has the ability to take over any normal character in the game world by driving into her body. This gives him control over the character and its abilities. This is used, among other things, for puzzle tasks in which the skills of different characters have to be used one after the other by changing the guest body.

development

According to developer Dave Perry , mechanics were "stolen" from Joust . As in Joust , in Messiah the character can fly for a short time. Apart from that, the similarities are thin. According to Perry, Messiah should be much darker than the games MDK and Earthworm Jim previously developed by Shiny Entertainment .

The game was one of the pioneers of tessellation graphics technology. Through tessellation, polygon objects can be increased or decreased in the total number of their polygons depending on the speed of the system and the level of detail required. Figures that are far away are represented by a lower number of polygons, for example, and require less computing capacity of the processor. The resources freed up can instead be used for other calculations and, in Messiah's case, were used to improve the graphic representation of details.

“The 11th commandment in the genre is: You should incorporate a multiplayer mode. Unfortunately Shiny ignored it, but Messiah has a lot to offer soloists. The loading times are as short as the fun is long when you come across new puzzles (usually the player has to work his way through several bodies to the goal) and lots of jump & run sequences. So if you have no problems with pseudo-religious topics in a sometimes quite hearty action adventure, you can safely spread your wings and flutter to the next soft shop to get the part. "

According to writer Erik Bethke, the game sold fewer than 10,000 copies in the first three months. It is therefore considered a commercial failure.

Even before the game was published, the LA Times reported on complaints from Christian groups about the choice of the title "Messiah".
