Methacrylamide is a chemical compound from the group of amides , which is mainly used as a monomer for the production of polymers or copolymers .

Extraction and presentation

Methacrylamide can be prepared by reacting acetone cyanohydrin with sulfuric acid .

properties

Methacrylamide is a flammable, light-sensitive white odorless solid that is easily soluble in water. It decomposes from a temperature above 106–109 ° C, producing nitrous gases . It has a heat of vaporization of 73.7 kJ / mol (under pressure) and a heat of polymerization of 56.1 kJ / mol.

use

Methacrylamide is used as a monomer for the production of polymers ( acrylic granules , e.g. for thermosetting paints and self-crosslinking dispersions ) and for the production of methyl methacrylate .

Risk assessment

In 2015, methacrylamide was included in the EU's ongoing action plan ( CoRAP ) in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) as part of substance evaluation . The effects of the substance on human health and the environment are re-evaluated and, if necessary, follow-up measures are initiated. Methacrylamide uptake was caused by worker exposure and other hazard-related concerns. The re-evaluation has been running since 2016 and is carried out by Sweden . In order to be able to reach a final assessment, further information was requested.
