The ships Fortuna Bay and Mexican Bay are large refrigerated ships from a small series built in Japan in the 1990s.

Shipyard and shipping company

The ships were the Shin Kurushima Dockyard Company in Akitsu on the shipyard in 1993 and 1994 Japanese Hiroshima built for the Swedish company NYK Lauritzen Cool. Today the ships each belong to a one-ship company belonging to Triton Schiffahrt. Triton Schiffahrt was founded in the city of Leer in 1994 and is one of the few German shipping companies to operate a larger number of reefer vessels again. In 2000 the company was taken over by Seatrade Holding in Groningen, the Netherlands, as a 100% subsidiary. Seatrade is the largest operator in the worldwide refrigerated shipping and also uses the 28 refrigerated ships from Triton Schiffahrt.

In 2007, the MPC-Reefer Flotte 2 umbrella fund invested in fourteen reefer vessels from the secondary market, including Fortuna Bay and Mexican Bay . All these ships are of Triton shipping bereedert .

Ship description

The ships sail under the Liberian flag with their home port Monrovia and have four hatches and four rooms with a total of 532,000 cbft. Rooms 2 to 4 are divided into a total of five decks by intermediate decks, while room 1 has four decks. This means that the cargo holds are divided into 19 compartments with a total of around 6,351 m² of space for cargo. These compartments can be cooled to eight different temperatures in the range from −30 ° C to +15 ° C for the respective charges.

The cooling air is forced through the air cooler by fans and flows vertically from bottom to top through the cargo standing on the grating in the hold. At the top, the air is sucked in again by fans. These fans are designed in such a way that they enable a maximum circulation of up to 90 times per hour. This means that the air volume related to the empty cargo space flows through the air cooler 90 times per hour to dissipate the heat. The ship is equipped with the temperature monitoring devices required by the USDA and also has lines and connections for cooling operation under a “ controlled atmosphere ” (CA). The ships meet the requirements of the 360 Quality Association .

There is space on the deck of the ships for a total of 126 standard containers (TEU). Electrical connections are installed for 44 refrigerated containers of 40 feet each (88 TEU). There is one crane per hatch so that the ships can handle loads regardless of the superstructure in the ports. Three of the cranes have a lifting capacity of 8 tons each, the crane arranged amidships can lift 36 tons, so it can also handle the refrigerated containers, which can weigh around 30 tons when loaded.

The deckhouse with the bridge and the living quarters for the crew are arranged aft. The engine room with the two-stroke drive engine , the auxiliary diesel generators for generating electricity and the refrigeration machines are also located here. At a speed of 19.2  knots , the ships consumed 35.5 tonnes of ballast and 39 tonnes of heavy oil when they were refrigerated . The bunker capacity for fuel is around 1,560 tons of heavy fuel oil and 110 tons of marine diesel oil (MDO).
