Mexico is a city (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Audrain County of in the middle northeastern US -amerikanischen state of Missouri . In 2010 Mexico had 11,543 inhabitants.

Mexico is about 60 km north of the Missouri River and about 85 km west of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois .

Mexico is located at 39 ° 10 '  N , 91 ° 53'  W and extends over 30.3 km², which is spread over 29.4 km² of land and 0.9 km² of water. The city forms the center of the South Fork Township , but also extends into the neighboring Salt River Township to the west .

Neighboring towns are Rush Hill (19.6 km east-northeast), Benton City (13.5 km east-southeast), Auxvasse (17.6 km south), Thompson (9.5 km west), and Centralia (15.5 km west).

The closest major cities are St. Louis (179 km east-southeast) and Kansas City (263 km west).

The US Highway 54 comes from the east to the city of Mexico, turns south on the outskirts, forms the southeastern bypass and leave the city to the south again. Missouri State Routes 15 and 22 meet in the city center . All other roads are inner-city connecting roads.

In Mexico, a Norfolk Southern Railway , which runs from St. Louis to Kansas City , meets a Kansas City Southern line , which also runs from Springfield in Illinois to Kansas City.

The Mexico Memorial Airport is a small airfield in the east of the city. The nearest major airport is Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport, 157 km east-southeast .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Mexico had 11,543 people in 4,727 households. The population density was 392.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.33 people lived in the 4727 households.

The racial the population was composed of 86.1 percent white, 8.3 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.8 percent Asian and 2.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 4.1 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

26.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 56.4 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.0 percent were 65 years or older. 51.7 percent of the population was female.
