The Salt River Township is around 70 km north of the Missouri River and around 90 km west of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois .
The Salt River Township is located at 39 ° 11 ' N , 91 ° 54' W and extends over 289.21 km², which is spread over 288.07 km² of land and 1.14 km² of water.
The Salt River Township is located in the center of Audrain County and stretches from the northern border with Monroe County to the southern border with Callaway County through the entire county. Within Audrain County, the Salt River Township borders the Prairie Township in the northeast, the South Fork Township in the east and Wilson Township in the west .

US Highway 54 and Missouri State Routes 15 and 22 meet in Salt River Township . All other roads within the township are subordinate and partly unpaved roads.
Through the Salt River Township, the Norfolk Southern Railway runs from St. Louis to Kansas City and the Kansas City Southern runs from Springfield , Illinois to Kansas City.
