Her political career began in 2001 in local politics when she as a runner-up on the electoral list of the Parti Socialiste by Gilles Savary a member of the City Council of Bordeaux was chosen and this belonged by 2007.

In March 2004 she was also elected a member of the General Council of the Gironde department and has since represented the canton of Bordeaux-2 . She succeeded in defeating the previous incumbent Chantal Bourragué from the Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP), who was also a member of the National Assembly as a representative of the Bordeaux constituency . This was the first time in 45 years that a politician from the political left was elected to represent the canton in the General Council.

Deputy and Minister Associate

In November 2004 she ran in a by-election in the constituency of Gironde II for the first time for a seat in the National Assembly, but was defeated by the UMP candidate, Hugues Martin , with 566 votes . On June 17, 2007, Michèle Delaunay, who supported Ségolène Royal's candidacy for the PS in the 2007 presidential election , was finally elected as Huges Martin's successor to the National Assembly and has since represented the constituency of Gironde II . In the election, she ran against the former Prime Minister and then incumbent Minister of State and Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development, Energy and Transport in the cabinet of François Fillon , Alain Juppé , who was a member of the constituency from 1997 to 2004. While she received 31.16 percent of the vote in the first ballot, she reached 50.93 percent in the second ballot and thus had a lead of 670 votes over Juppé. On the evening of the election, Juppé announced his resignation from his ministerial office as he was unable to obtain a mandate in the parliamentary elections.

After François Hollande, who was supported by her in the PS primaries, was elected President and Jean-Marc Ayrault was appointed Prime Minister, she was appointed Assistant Minister for Seniors and Care in his cabinet on May 16, 2012 and is as subordinate to such Minister of Social Affairs and Health Marisol Touraine .
