Michael Allaby

John Michael Allaby (born September 18, 1933 in Belper , Derbyshire , England ) is a British writer and publisher of special climatic and ecological books with additional professional experience as a Royal Air Force pilot , actor and magazine editor.

Professional career

Early professions

From 1949 to 1951 Allaby was a police cadet (about "police trainee "). He then served in the Royal Air Force from 1951 to 1954 and was trained as a pilot . After leaving the Air Force, he worked as an actor from 1954 to 1964. On January 3, 1957, he married Marthe McGregor.

From 1964 to 1972 he was an editor for the charitable Soil Association in Suffolk , England, and from 1967 to 1972 he published the magazine Span . From 1970 to 1972 he was a member of the Board of Directors for Ecosystems Ltd. in Wadebridge , Cornwall , England and editor of The Ecologist ; In 1972 he became managing director.

Activity as a writer and editor

Allaby has been working as a freelance writer since 1973 .

He has published extensively on scientific subjects, particularly ecology and weather . In addition, he wrote dictionaries and encyclopedias for Macmillan Publishers and Oxford University Press .

Awards and honors

  • His book The Food Chain won second prize at the Times Educational Supplement Information Book Award in 1984 .
  • The New York Public Library selected Dangerous Weather: Hurricanes as one of their 1998 teen books.
  • He won the Aventis Junior Prize of the Royal Society Prizes for Science Books for academic books in 2001 for How the Weather Works .

Memberships

Allaby is a member of the Society for the History of Natural History , the Planetary Society , the Society of Authors , the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Association of British Science Writers .

Publications

Michael Allaby has written more than 70 books and published seven books as editor, a selection of which has been made. Some of his books have been translated into Chinese, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish.
