Michael Behrendt (born June 19, 1951 in Hamburg ) is a German industrial manager.

Life and professional history

After graduating from high school in 1970 at the old-language Kirchpauer Grammar School in Hamburg-Hamm and after eighteen months of work in an import and export company, Behrendt studied law at the University of Hamburg from 1972 to 1976 . He then went to Boston and New York for internships before doing his community service from 1979 . He completed his legal clerkship in 1984 with the assessor exam at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court.

In 1985 he joined the legal department of VTG AG , where he was initially appointed head of the tank storage division in 1990 and finally managing director in 1994.

After merging with Lehnkering's logistics activities , he became CEO of the new VTG-Lehnkering AG in 1999 and at the same time a member of the board of the liner shipping company Hapag-Lloyd . Since January 2002 he has been Chairman of the Board of Management of Hapag-Lloyd, which he held until June 30, 2014. After the complete takeover of Hapag-Lloyd by Preussag AG and its renaming to TUI AG , Behrendt also became a member of the Executive Board of TUI AG in May 2006, at the same time head of the shipping division and remained so until the sale of Hapag-Lloyd to the Albert Ballin consortium in 2008 After retiring from the Hapag-Lloyd Management Board in 2014, he moved to the company's Supervisory Board in December of the same year, where he became Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

Honorary positions

From 1997 to 1998 he was honorary chairman of the Association of Commercial Tank Farm Operators. In 2005 he was elected Vice President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and held this office until 2014. From 2008 to 2014 he was Chairman of the Association of German Shipowners and since 2012 he has been President of the Hamburg Overseas Club . He is chairman of the board of the Hapag-Lloyd-Stiftung, established in 1997, a member of the board of the Friends of the St. Pauli Theater and a member of the supervisory board of the Hamburg State Opera . He is also chairman of the Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein State Board of Trustees of the Stifterverband .

Michael Behrendt is married and has a son and a daughter.
