Michael Philip Anderson (born December 25, 1959 in Plattsburgh , New York , USA , † February 1, 2003 over the southern United States) was an American astronaut .
Career
Anderson graduated in 1977 the Cheney High School in Cheney ( Washington acquired) from 1981 and the Bachelor Accounts in physics and astronomy at the University of Washington . After joining the United States Air Force (USAF), he served, among other things, as a pilot instructor and aircraft commander, and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel . In 1990, Anderson received his Masters Degree in Physics from Creighton University in Nebraska . During his time with the USAF, he completed over 3000 hours of flight.
In December 1994, Anderson was selected by NASA for the astronaut program and qualified as a mission specialist after a year of training. During his two space flights, he spent over 24 days in earth orbit .
On February 1, 2003, Anderson and the other six astronauts on the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia were killed returning to Earth when the space shuttle broke about 60 km. Anderson left a wife and two children. His grave is in Arlington National Cemetery .
Astronaut activity
- STS-89 , Endeavor (January 23-31, 1998): Anderson served as a mission specialist on the eighth Shuttle Mir mission. One of the tasks of the mission was to exchange the US astronaut David A. Wolf on board the Mir for Andrew SW Thomas . Scientific equipment and supplies were also brought to the Mir.
- STS-107 , Columbia (January 16 - February 1, 2003): Served as payload commander on the 113th Space Shuttle mission. About 80 scientific experiments were carried out on this 16-day research mission. When re-entering the earth's atmosphere, 16 minutes before the planned landing, the Columbia broke due to damage to the heat shield . All seven astronauts were killed.
