Michael Wendler

Michael Wendler (born September 21, 1610 in Schlettau , † November 21, 1671 in Wittenberg ), also Wendeler or Wendelerus , was a German moral philosopher and Lutheran theologian.

Life

Michael was the son of the Schlettau citizen and businessman Thomas Wendler (* 1572; † October 19, 1616 in Schlettau) and his first wife Katharina Fleischer (Fischer ?, * 1572; † September 22, 1612 in Schlettau). Since his mother died at a young age, his father remarried a woman named Katharina Limmer (also: Leiner ,; † 1630). He was thus a half-brother of the Regensburg school principal and pastor David Wendler (born March 16, 1616 in Schlettau, † May 4, 1677 in Regensburg). After a short visit from June 16, 1622 to June 28, 1622, the electoral state school St. Afra in Meißen , his stepmother sent him to the school in Annaberg at the age of thirteen . On October 6, 1628 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , where he initially concentrated on philological studies with Erasmus Schmid and mathematics and astronomy lessons with Ambrosius Rhode .

In Wittenberg he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy on April 9, 1633, received permission on September 3 of the same year to teach as a master's degree at universities, and on March 19, 1638 was accepted as an adjunct to the faculty of philosophy . Then he turned to the study of theology, where he attended the lectures of Jakob Martini , Paul Röber , Wilhelm Leyser I and Johann Hülsemann . After a short further training at the University of Helmstedt , he became professor of ethics at the Wittenberg University on October 3, 1640. His lectures on the practical philosophy of morality overlapped more and more with theological topics, so that he had to acquire the necessary tools. He was promoted to licentiate on November 1, 1649 and received his doctorate in theology on November 12, 1650. In the year of his doctorate he became associate professor of theology and in 1666 assessor of the theological faculty. During his time as a professor in Wittenberg, he also took part in the organizational tasks of Leucorea. In the winter semesters 1645, 1651, 1657, 1663 and 1669 he was dean of the philosophical faculty and in the summer semesters 1650 and 1666 rector of the alma mater . In 1661 he was also given the task of managing the Wittenberg university library. As he was no longer able to fully carry out his duties with increasing age, he received a substitute in Christian Röhrensee .

family

Wendler was married twice. His first marriage was on January 7, 1641 in Wittenberg with Margaretha Körwitz (also: Körbitz, * May 22, 1595 in Wittenberg; † February 3, 1648 ibid.), The widow of the Wittenberg goldsmith and councilor Wilhelm Michaelis (* 24. March 1595 in Bosenwurth; † September 4, 1638 in Wittenberg), the daughter of the Wittenberg citizen Zacharias Körbitz and his wife Margarethe NN. (Daughter of the pastor in Schlieben Joachim Engelhart?). The marriage remained childless.

He concluded his second marriage on March 27, 1649 in Aue with Maria Dauth (* Magdeburg; † 1683 Wittenberg), the daughter of the Magdeburg mayor and later Episcopal Court Councilor and Vice Chancellor Johann Dauth (* March 9, 1581 in Ochsenfurt; † 23. February 1634 on the journey to Frankfurt / Main, near Verden) and his wife Anna Lutherod (born January 26, 1602 in Magdeburg, † November 25, 1667 in Wittenberg). The marriage resulted in five sons and five daughters, of which only two sons survived the father. We know of these children:

  • Johann Andreas Wendler,
  • the theologian in Kemberg David Wendler (born August 30, 1652 in Wittenberg, † March 21, 1693 in Kemberg) and
  • the daughter Anna Maria Wendler, who in 1685 married the Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon Appellate Council and City Syndic of Wittenberg , Johann Paul Schröter (1663–1729).
