Michael Wirth the Elder (born January 6, 1547 in Löwenberg , Duchy of Schweidnitz-Jauer , † December 3, 1611 in Leipzig ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

The son of the lawyer of the same name and his wife Magdalena Reusner, attended the school in his hometown and then the Trozendorf in Goldberg under the direction of Valentin Friedland . In 1567 he moved to the University of Leipzig , earned his baccalaureate in 1568 and in 1569 received a master's degree in the seven liberal arts . In 1570 he was at the Collegiate Woman College , found in 1571 as assessor access to the philosophy department, completed a law degree, has 1,573 bachelor at the Faculty of Law, received in 1576 the licentiate in law and a doctorate in 1577 for Doctor of Law .

As early as 1575 he was appointed professor of law, in 1577 became an assessor at the Court of Appeal in Dresden, in 1579 an advocate at the Oberhofgericht in Leipzig, took over the professorship of the Codex in 1580, became Chancellor of the Saxon Court in Coburg in 1581 , and came back to Leipzig in 1592 where he was director of the consistory, assessor at the court of higher courts, canon at the monastery in Merseburg and 1601 full professor of the law faculty. Wirth also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University. He was dean of the philosophical faculty and in the winter semesters 1574, 1578 and 1592 rector of the alma mater .

He died of consumption in 1611 and was buried on December 5, 1611 in the Paulinerkirche in Leipzig .

Wirth was married twice. His first marriage was in 1577 with Anna († 1587), a daughter of the professor of law, Franz Kram . In his second marriage, he married Charitas, a daughter of Paul Lobwasser. Both marriages remained childless. Since he had no heirs, he left the university a generous sum of 4,000 guilders, so that twelve students could receive scholarships.
