Kurlenja graduated from the Mining - Faculty of the Polytechnic Institute Tomsk in 1953 with honors. After a three-year aspiration , he defended his candidate dissertation in 1956 on the regulation of rock pressure when mining coal deposits . He then became assistant to the vice dean of the mining faculty of Tomsk Polytechnic Institute.

1960 Kurlenja was invited by Timofei Fedorovich Gorbachev researcher at the Laboratory of rock pressure of the Institute of Mining Affairs ( Mountain Sciences , IGD) of the Siberian Department (SO) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN SSSR, 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)) in Novosibirsk . 1962–1963 he studied at the mechanical - mathematical faculty of the Novosibirsk University as part of the program for the application of modern methods of mathematics and mechanics in scientific work. In 1973 he defended his doctoral thesis on experimental methods for determining the state of stress in sedimentary rocks .

Kurlenja's research focus was geomechanics and in particular the dynamics of the processes involved in the extraction of mineral resources . With that he became the founder of a new scientific school. In 1987 he succeeded Yevgeny Ivanovich Schemjakins as director of the IGD. He was elected a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR in 1987 and a full member of the RAN in the Section for Earth Sciences and Ecology in 1991 .
