Michail Wladimirowitsch Leontjew ( Russian Михаи́л Влади́мирович Лео́нтьев , scientific transliteration Michail Vladimirovič Leont'ev ; born  October 12, 1958 in Moscow ) is a Russian journalist. He moderates the political program “Odnako” (However) on the market-leading Russian television station Pervy kanal (First Channel) and is editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine of the same name “Однако”. For his line loyal to the Kremlin he got the post of Vice President and Press Secretary of the Russian oil company "Rosneft".

Life and family

Michail Leontjew was born in Moscow in 1958 as the son of a designer and a statistics lecturer. After graduating in economics from the Plekhanov Academy of Economics in Moscow in 1979, Leontiev worked at a Soviet research institute. In 1985 he retired, according to his own statements, into "inner immigration" and worked as a cabinet maker, unskilled worker, guard of Boris Pasternak's dacha in Peredelkino and a tutor in history.

Mikhail Leontiev is married for the second time. His wife Maria is a child psychologist and they have their daughter Daria (1999) together. His ex-wife is married to a US citizen and lives in the US with their two children from their first marriage.

He speaks English and German.

Journalistic activity

In 1987 Mikhail Leontiev published his first newspaper articles and from December 1989 he wrote for the newly founded daily Kommersant .

In 1990 he took over the management of the economic department of Nezavisimaya Gazeta , which at the time belonged to the Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky , who lived in London . In 1993 he participated in the founding of the daily Sevodnja , of which he was the first deputy editor-in-chief.

Leontjew has been a television journalist since 1997, initially for the television broadcaster TWZ , which is owned by the Moscow city council and is considered the house broadcaster of Moscow's Lord Mayor Yuri Luzhkov . Since February 1999 Mikhail Leontjew has been working for the Russian state television broadcaster Perwy kanal (First Channel), which is pursuing a pro-government course.

According to him, his political views developed from “mild dissidentism” during the Soviet era to “right-wing conservatism”. According to the voice of Russia , Mikhail Leontiev represents “the point of view of the current Russian political elite in their concern to find a special way for Russia - and in their rejection of both communism and the established values ​​of a capitalist society”.

On television he always appears tired and unshaven, another characteristic is his hoarse voice.

Mikhail Leontjew is also known for personal statements, whereby he often exceeds the limits of correctness. In 2002, the Kiev District Court sentenced him to a fine for defaming the wife of future Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko as an "American agent". However, Leontiev refused to pay and was banned from entering Ukraine for five years. Leontjew also deals with the Yushchenko family in the film The Orange Children of the Third Reich ( Russian : Оранжевые дети Третьего Рейха) in collaboration with Weronika Krasheninnikova from February 3, 2010.

In Latvia he was declared a persona non grata in 2003 .

Political activity

Michail Leontjew ran for parliamentary elections in December 1995, but received too few votes for a seat in the Russian parliament. He has been a member of the ruling United Russia party since December 2002 and says of himself: “I've been involved in politics all my life. However, my professional activity is journalism by sheer coincidence. "

In the 2018 gubernatorial election in Khakassia , Leontiev supported the ruling party's candidate, Viktor Simin , against his communist opponent Valentin Konovalov. For the first time, United Russia candidates lost the first count in four regions: Khakassia, Khabarovsk , Vladimir Oblast and Primorye .

Leontjew is a co-owner of the Moscow restaurant "Oprichnik".

Awards

Mikhail Leontjew received the journalism award "Золотое перо России" ("The Golden Pen of Russia") and was awarded the TEFI Award of the Academy of Russian Television in 1997 .
