Michelia ( Magnolia sect. Michelia ) is a section from the genus of Magnolia ( Magnolia ) within the family of the Magnoliaceae (Magnoliaceae). The approximately 50 species are distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia including southern China .

description

Michelia species grow as evergreen trees and shrubs . Growth shape , leaves and flowers of the Michelia species are similar to those of other magnolia , with the special feature that the flowers are not at the end of the branches, but in groups between the leaves.

use

Some Michelia species are important as suppliers of wood in their home countries , others (see list below) are planted as ornamental trees.

Systematics

The Michelia species, traditionally managed as an independent genus , are placed in the genus Magnolia according to research results from the beginning of the 21st century, in particular through DNA sequence analysis , since their members are genetically closer to the Magnolia subgenus (now section) Yulania than they are to the Magnolia section .

The name Michelia honors the Florentine botanist Pier Antonio Micheli (1679–1737).
