The original street village of Michelrieth has been ruled by the Fulda Abbey and the associated Provostry Holzkirchen since the 9th century . As of the 12th century, the Counts of Wertheim incorporated Michelrieth into their domain as bailiffs. After their male line died out and the subsequent inheritance disputes, the Counts of Löwenstein-Wertheim became the determining power. The red lion in the coat of arms is evidence of this. Michelrieth was the seat of the centering Court cents Michelrieth . The Löwenstein remained the determining force in Michelrieth until 1848. Since 1814 the county towns belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

In 1862 the district office of Marktheidenfeld was formed, on whose administrative territory Michelrieth was located. In 1939, as everywhere in the German Reich, the designation district was introduced. Michelrieth was now one of the 47 municipalities in the Marktheidenfeld district (license plate MAR ). With the dissolution of the Marktheidenfeld district in 1972, Michelrieth came to the newly formed Main-Spessart district (license plate at that time KAR , today MSP ).

On July 1, 1972, the community Michelrieth was dissolved and incorporated into Altfeld . Michelrieth has been part of Marktheidenfeld since January 1, 1976.
