DP camp

Medal of the Belarusian Scout Association (1947)

On August 20, 1946, a camp for so-called displaced persons was opened in the village . This was used to describe civilians who were outside their home country due to the war and were unable to return or relocate to another country without help. 550 people (October 31, 1947) of various nationalities were accommodated in the camp, including Russians , Poles , Ukrainians and Belarusians . The Belarusian inmates organized their own scout association, which was named after Kastus Kalinouski and had already been founded in Regensburg. In 1947 the unit "Bavaria" was established there, headed by Vitaut Kipel, a later activist of the Belarusian exile community in the USA, and even published periodicals for scouts. In addition, a separate grammar school was set up in the camp, which taught in Belarusian and ended its first year of school on August 17, 1946. The number of students was at times between 75 and 122 young people. On June 28, 1947, it was named after the Belarusian poet Janka Kupala . Connections to the local high school in Cham were established. In October 1948 the school was divided when several teachers and students had to move to Windischbergerdorf , where 500 Belarusians already lived. The camp was closed on May 19, 1949. The grammar school itself was relocated to Backnang in 1949 , where it existed until February 1950.
