List of architectural monuments in Cham (Upper Palatinate)
The monuments of the Upper Palatinate town of Cham are compiled on this page . This table is a partial list of the list of architectural monuments in Bavaria . The basis is the Bavarian Monument List , which was first drawn up on the basis of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act of October 1, 1973 and has since been managed by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . The following information does not replace the legally binding information from the monument protection authority.
Ensemble market place
File number: E-3-72-116-1
The elongated, trapezoidal main square of the old town dates back to the beginning of the 13th century, when the Wittelsbach Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria moved the original settlement below the Reichsburg am Galgenberg here between 1204 and 1210. The location of the new settlement was more traffic-friendly, easier to build on and naturally better shielded, as the mountain spur pushed up to the right bank of the Regen River formed a river loop that could surround two thirds of the city's later circumference. The third that was still missing on the land side was sealed off by an artificial ditch from the western to the eastern bank of the river, a ravine that the railway line later used as a puncture and which is therefore still clearly visible today.
The oval city outline, which was only pronounced to a clear corner in the northwest, was already surrounded by an inner defensive wall with towers in the middle of the 13th century, which had to be repaired after the city fire of 1344. The danger of raids, which always threatened to come from Bohemia in the Cham basin, was countered at the time of the Hussite invasions with the construction of a second, outer wall, which was largely moved up to the river bank and which in the northeast also protected the hospital in front of the inner wall. This multi-part weir system can only be seen in the northwest corner at the Biertor and in the so-called Spatzenturm, where parts of the inner and outer city wall and the moat that adjoins the river have been preserved, while in the southwest and south areas only the inner wall with the towering one remains Straubinger Tower has stopped.
The choir of the parish church, which lies almost a meter exactly in the geometric mean of the city area, with its high tower characterizes the market square that adjoins it to the east. The multi-tiered town hall is built in the northern connection to the church. The square, which slopes slightly towards the east due to the sloping spur terrain, is surrounded by two- and three-storey town houses; towards the west, the remarkable late Gothic former Gasthaus Zur Krone and the mighty mansard roof house No. 10 form a characteristic wall. The south and north sides are formed by buildings whose simple plastered facades mostly date from the 19th century or have been redesigned according to historical models.
At the northeast corner, the new department store building from 1971 overbuilt the old town plot structure and the historical image of the market square was impaired by the scale and the facade design. From the market square, the alleys and streets lead in all directions of the old town, with no clear, superordinate access system being discernible. In the southeast, after the great city fires of 1873 and 1877, new roads were opened up.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
