Mika Kulmala (born April 25, 1989 ) is a Finnish ski jumper .

Career

Kulmala, who starts for the Finnish club Lahden Hiihtoseura , made his international debut in the FIS Cup on December 17, 2005 in Kuopio . Despite two placements, it was not until September 2006 that he was able to compete in another international competition in Örnsköldsvik . Here, too, he was able to improve his performance in the second competition with 16th place. In the summer of the following year, Kulmala got a place in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup . After he was disqualified in the first competition, he remained unsuccessful in the second competition. After only a 53rd place came out in Kranj in the end, Kuopio jumped again in the FIS Cup in January 2008 and narrowly missed the top 10 placements. After a few months' international break, he jumped again in the Continental Cup in October 2008 and won his first Continental Cup points on October 11, 2008 in Falun . In the second competition, too, he clearly achieved this with 20th place. However, his few points remained, after he had only reached 58th place in Rovaniemi, he retired from the international stage for months. In March 2009 he tried again in Trondheim , but again stayed in one of the last places. After he was unable to score in the summer and only achieved good placements in the FIS Cup in the meantime, he was again in the Continental Cup squad for the 2009/10 season , but again missed round two and thus important points in all competitions.

At the Finnish Summer Championships 2010 in Lahti he won the team jumping title together with Ville Larinto , Kalle Keituri and Janne Ahonen . In the 2010/11 season Kulmala only appeared in the jumping in Rovaniemi , but again fell short of expectations. In the summer of 2011 he started again in the FIS Cup in Szczyrk and was placed among the top ten for the first time in the second competition. After he was able to defend his title from the previous year at the Finnish Summer Championships in 2011, he again clearly missed the points on his Continental Cup comeback in Trondheim in September and Rovaniemi in December.

In August 2012 he narrowly missed the podium in the FIS Cup in Kuopio with fourth place. In the Continental Cup, Kulmala made his breakthrough on the same hill for the first time only one day later, when he reached ninth place and thus a top 10 position for the first time. The following day, with fourth place, he narrowly missed the podium. A short time later, Kulmala was to make his debut in the ski jumping Grand Prix . After a disqualification in the first competition, he only finished 43rd in the second competition, before winning silver with the team at the Finnish Summer Championships a short time later and finishing sixth in the individual competition.

After rather disappointing competitions in the Continental Cup in Lillehammer and Klingenthal in September 2012, it was surprisingly set up for the World Cup for the 2012/13 season . In Kuusamo , however, he missed a start in the competition after finishing 41st in qualifying. In the team competition he achieved a good seventh place with Olli Muotka , Ville Larinto and Lauri Asikainen when the German team won . At the following individual World Cup in Sochi , he was the last of the first round to miss the opportunity to win his first World Cup points. At the end of December 2012 he tried his luck again in the Continental Cup, but stayed in Engelberg without winning a point.

After he missed the qualification for the individual competition in Zakopane in January 2013 , he finished tenth with the team in the team competition. In March he was again in the team at the Lahti team competition and came in eighth with it. In Kuopio he again missed the qualification for the individual World Cup jumping.
