Mildred McElroy Clingerman (nee Mildred McElroy ; born March 14, 1918 in Allen , Oklahoma ; died February 26, 1997 in Collin , Texas ) was an American science fiction writer.

Life

Mildred McElroy was the daughter of Arthur McElroy, a railroad worker, and Meda, née Bush. In 1929 the family moved to Tucson . Mildred attended Tucson High School and then the University of Arizona . In 1937 she married the construction project manager Stuart Kendall Clingerman and had a daughter (* 1940) and a son (* 1942) with him. Apart from a period during the Second World War when she worked in a flight school, she was a housewife all her life.

Her first science fiction short Minister Without Portfolio appeared in 1952 in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, edited by Anthony Boucher . Boucher called Clingerman a "very happy discovery" and dedicated his 1952 anthology The Best from Fantasy and Science Fiction to it . In the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction also the majority of the following stories Clingermans, a total of 19 SF stories appeared in the period 1952 to 1975. 1961 appeared A cupful of Space , a collection of 16 of her stories. Three of her stories appeared in German translation. She wrote about women and science fiction:

"As to the male-oriented nature of the genre, perhaps it's just that there are more male writers of any sort than female. And isn't the male readership of fantasy and science fiction confined, for the most part, to the young man, under 30 years, say? And doesn't that readership (male or female) comprise a small proportion of the reading population — the more intelligent, aware, imaginative, dreaming-wishing, playing-with-ideas group (that is always small)?

Women, I think, always tend to be more practical minded - a bit grimmer in outlook than men. Less hopeful, too beset with daily reality-fighting things that are: dirt, budgets, disorder. Planning meals, bringing up children, battling for their rights. Poor dears, most of them grow up too fast. The sense of wonder isn't easy for most of them to maintain. Men (delightful creatures) keep it to the end. Women have made it possible for them to do so. "

In addition to her SF stories, Clingerman published articles in Good Housekeeping and Collier’s . She was a founder of the Tucson Writer's Club , served on the board of directors of the Tucson Press Club, and taught courses at the University of Arizona .

In 2014 she was posthumously awarded the Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award for her life's work . In 2017, The Clingerman Files appeared , another collection of her stories, which in addition to the previously published ones also contains several previously unpublished stories.
