Miles is a small town in southern Queensland , Australia . The city is located approximately 340 kilometers west of the capital Brisbane , 130 kilometers northwest of Dalby and 140 kilometers east of Roma in the Western Downs region of Queensland. Miles has about 1,100 residents.
Miles lies on a flat spot on Dogwood Creek , where the German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt crossed the river in 1844 on his first expedition to Australia . Leichhardt named the place Dogwood Crossing , which was also the official name of the first settlement that was built there. It was later renamed in honor of William Miles, a senior official in the Queensland colony.
Like most other cities in the region, Miles is economically shaped by agriculture. The cultivation of wheat, barley and cotton plays just as important a role as cattle and sheep breeding. Other important branches of industry are wood processing and the mining of bentonite deposits .
Miles is at the intersection of Warrego Highway and Leichhardt Highway . The first runs east-west and connects Miles with Dalby and Toowoomba in the east and Roma in the west. The Leichhardt Highway runs north-south through Miles and has connections to Goondiwindi in the south and Gladstone and Rockhampton in the north. Miles also has a train station on the Brisbane- Charleville rail link , which is served by QR .
