Mina Urgan

Mîna Urgan (born May 14, 1916 in Istanbul ; † June 15, 2000 ibid) was a Turkish professor of English literature, writer , translator and feminist .

Life

Urgan was born in Istanbul in the first half of May 1916. She once wrote that her age was raised, which was not uncommon in Turkey at the time, in order to be able to sell a portion of a hammam that her father had left behind. When her ID card was renewed in the following years, a left friend wanted to do her a favor and changed her date of birth to May 1st. Therefore, official sources also state that her date of birth was May 1, 1915. Her father, Tahsin Nahit, was a poet, and her mother's name was Şefika. She lost her father when she was only two years old. She grew up with her mother and her second husband, Falih Rıfkı Atay . Her stepfather and his artist friends influenced Urgan's life as an artist. She was also one of the first women skiers and swimmers in Turkey.

After she turned 18 and was allowed to choose her own surname according to the surname law in Turkey, a friend, Necip Fazıl Kısakürek , recommended her the surname “Urgan” (English: “Strick”) on the grounds: “You will Anyway, soon hanged because you're on the left. Therefore the last name 'Urgan' suits you ”.

She died on June 15, 2000 at the age of 84. Istanbul University's Institute of English Language and Literature, where she worked, holds a story competition every year in memory of Urgan.

Career

After graduating from the American Kız Koleji (German: American Girls College) in Arnavutköy , which is now called Robert Kolej (German: Robert College ), she studied at the Faculty of Literature at Istanbul University , Department of French Philology. Urgan, who also received her doctorate in the Department of English Philology of the same faculty, was appointed lecturer in 1949 with her doctoral thesis Elizabeth Devri Tiyatrosunda Soytarılar (German Harlequins in the Theater of the Elizabethan Age ). In 1960 she became a professor of English literature and in 1977 she retired.

Mîna Urgan has translated works by writers such as Aldous Huxley , Graham Greene , Henry Fielding , Honoré de Balzac , John Galsworthy , Thomas Malory , William Golding and William Shakespeare into Turkish. With the literary works Bir Dinozorun Anıları (German: The memories of a dinosaur) and Bir Dinozorun Gezileri (German: The journeys of a dinosaur) she reaped great success.

Importance as a literary scholar

Mîna Urgan was an important translator, writer and thinker; she was known for her ability to write in both Turkish and English and made an important contribution to literature. Especially with her work İngiliz Edebiyatı Tarihi (English History of English Literature ), the first part of which was published in 1986 and the fifth and last in 1993, but also with her research on Thomas More , Shakespeare and Virginia Woolf , she was a very influential person. The writer, who translated important works from world literature into Turkish, in her work Edebiyatta Ütopya Kavramı ve Thomas More (German: the utopia term in literature and Thomas More ) thematized life within the framework of freedom and peace and thus had great things Success. In 1995 Urgan's work Virginia Woolf was published, followed in 1997 by DH Lawrence Incelemesi (English: DH Lawrence : an investigation). After her memoir was published in 1998, Mîna Urgan gained wider audiences and recognition.

Bir Dinozorun Anıları and Bir Dinozorun Gezileri ( The Memories of a Dinosaur and The Journeys of a Dinosaur )

The book Bir Dinozorun Anıları ( Eng . "The memories of a dinosaur"), in which Urgan tells from the 83 years of her life as well as from the last hundred years, reached 74 editions and became a bestseller. Later she wrote the book Bir Dinozorun Gezileri ( Eng . "The Travels of a Dinosaur"), which also aroused great interest.

The work Bir Dinozorun Anıları applies with his stories of personalities who played an important role in the Turkish literature and society, such as Ataturk , Halide Edip , Necip Fazıl , Abidin Dino , Neyzen Tevfik , Sait Faik , Yahya Kemal and Ahmet Haşim as an important Contemporary document. In it she reports with full zest for life and in a cheerful way about her trips to Anatolia, Paris, England, Italy, Soviet Russia, America and her Blue Voyage ("Mavi Yolculuk") in Bodrum, which she made with very little money.

The author, whose two books were selling well, described this situation in an ironic way:

“I didn't understand how my books were selling so well, I still don't understand. How can my book sell so well? I have oppositional behavior in this society. My books sell well, am I writing banally? Have I done something wrong? "

Political position

Urgan entered politics in 1960 and was one of the founding members of the Labor Party of Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye İşçi Partisi (TİP)) and the Party for Freedom and Solidarity (Turkish: Özgürlük ve Dayanışma Partisi (ÖDP)). In the elections of April 18, 1999, she took part as the third deputy member of the ÖDP, but the party could not exceed the applicable threshold of 10%. The author spoke about her socialist identity in her writings and interviews, telling ironically about her political life and viewpoint as follows:

“Even though I have a very specific attitude, I don't understand politics at all. For example, I knew nothing about the internal conflicts of the TIP party, to which I belong, because both sides talked about socialism and about fighting poverty. I thought these people were thinking the same thing. It turned out that there were huge differences between them. I guess I'm an idiot when it comes to such topics. I can't see things politically. "
