geography

Geographical location

The central mountain rises as part of the "High Rhön" within the training area Wildflecken who by the nature park Rhön and Bayerische Rhon and the biosphere reserve Rhön is surrounded. Its two mountain tops are on the border of the Bad Kissingen ( Franconia ) and Fulda ( East Hesse ) districts.

The core town of Gersfeld (Hesse) is around 4.7 km north of Mittelberg, while that of the Wildflecken market (Bavaria) is around 3.5 km south. The Kippelbach desert is located on its northern slope .

The Mittelberg has two mountain peaks, the larger west knoll and the correspondingly smaller east knoll, on which two transmitter masts stand; they are about 165 m apart. Its foothills or neighboring mountains are (clockwise): Reesberg ( 861  m ) in the north-northeast, Schachen ( 857  m ) in the east, Arnsberg ( 843  m ) and Kreuzberg ( 927.8  m ) in the southeast, Zornberg ( 838  m ) in the South, Eierhauckberg ( 909.9  m ) in the southwest and Rommerser Berg ( 850.2  m ) in the northwest [height in each case in meters above sea level].

Watershed

Part of the Rhine-Weser watershed runs over the Mittelberg . Watercourses that run from the mountain in southerly directions flow into the Rhine via Sinn , Franconian Saale and Main , and the water of those brooks that drain in northern directions flows via Schmalnau ( called Rommerser Wasser in the upper and middle reaches ) and Fulda in the Weser .

fauna

While the hilltop and most of the slopes of the Mittelberg are predominantly unforested, the forest area "Mittelwald" spreads out on the northern slope of the mountain towards the "Kalkgraben".

Military training area people's march

Because part of the Wildflecken military training area is located on the Mittelberg, it is normally closed to the public. However, a tradition that the Bundeswehr continues after the American forces withdrew from Wildflecken (1994) is the “People's March” through the restricted military area in the summer . It is possible to hike the otherwise inaccessible terrain on prescribed paths. With routes that change every year, the Mittelberg can occasionally be hiked on prescribed paths and you can get to the "Kippelbach desert".

Sports history

On the northern slope of the Mittelberg, the United States Army once operated a ski slope with a ski lift as part of the military training area , so that ski slopes could be operated. The slope ended in the area of the village Kippelbach west of the Reesberg .
