history

Mining

On the Bockswieser Gangzug running near Mittelschulenberg, mining on silver-containing galena was carried out from the end of the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century . In 1697 the St. Martins (or Mertens) colliery near the Oberschulenberg district is mentioned. In the current location of Mittelschulenberg, the Duke August Wilhelm mine opened on June 15, 1703 as the first mine . Emperor Heinrich is said to have had a mine there before that. The exposed ores were of poor quality, so that mining was stopped again in 1728 and only research work was carried out until 1754. Mining ceased completely until the Juliane Sophia mine started operating in 1776.

At the end of the 19th century , only the Juliane Sophie mine near Mittelschulenberg was still in operation in the Schulenberg district. There were several stamp mills on the Weißer Wasser for processing the extracted ores .

After all known ore reserves had been depleted, mining was finally stopped in 1904.

Oberschulenberg belonged to the community of Schulenberg in the Upper Harz , which was incorporated into Clausthal-Zellerfeld on January 1, 2015.
