The Sölvesborg transmitter of the Swedish Foreign Broadcasting Service , which was built from 1982 to 1984 and put into operation in 1985, is located in the Swedish province of Blekinge län in the municipality of Sölvesborg near the town of Hällevik .
It was broadcast on the medium wave frequency 1179 kHz with a transmission power of up to 600 kilowatts. The transmission antenna of the system consists of two very impressive, 135-meter-high, free-standing, grounded steel lattice towers, which are fed with the radiofrequency energy to be radiated halfway up via cables laid parallel to the corner posts.
Thanks to its optimal location by the sea, the station in Sölvesborg could also be received during the day - provided it was in operation at this time - in the entire southern Baltic region. The sea water with its good electrical conductivity ensures an optimal spread of the ground wave .
Broadcasting on 1179 kHz was stopped at midnight local time on October 30, 2010, after the management of Sveriges Radio had decided that the operation was no longer financially and journalistically justified because of the cheaper broadcast over the Internet. On the same day, the shortwave broadcasts from Sweden were ended ( Hörby station ).
On December 11, 2012, it became known that all transmission facilities including the masts of the Sölvesborg transmitter will be demolished in the course of 2013.
