In the middle of the Malestream is a German documentary by the feminist filmmaker Helke Sander from 2005 . The film, which is staged economically and independently of television, provides a report on the beginnings of the new women's movement as a part of West German post-war history that has so far been neglected .

content

The film focuses on the little-known struggles of direction of the early phase of the new women's movement in Germany, which were mainly fought over the children's issue. With maternal politics , the self- image of men as fathers, the campaign against the abortion paragraph 218 , the actually existing birthing strike of women and the political dispute between the women's movement and the Christian churches , core issues of the movement are touched upon.

The work makes use of a large number of old documentary materials. A two-day discussion with eight women who were active in the women's movement in autumn 2004 served as a framework. The participants were Halina Bendkowski , Gisela Erler , Peggi Liebisch, Johanna Mierendorff, Signe Theill, Bettina Schoeller , Annegret Stopczyk and Helke Sander .

The basic thesis of this historical reconstruction by Helke Sander, who herself was one of the first activists, is that the issue of childcare was still at the center of the women's movement in 1968 and was only pushed aside later. In the discussion, Sander tries to find the cause.

backgrounds

Since its inception, there have often been violent political contradictions and complex conflicts in the new women's movement in West Germany. In the media , the women's movement was narrowed down to Alice Schwarzer , her publication The Small Difference and Its Big Consequences (1975) and the campaign against abortion paragraph 218 from the 1970s onwards .

Reviews

“It is not opulent documentary cinema, nor is it a film essay, as claimed, for that the film language is all too oriented towards the verbal. In the middle of the malestream, however, is useful: A contribution to feminist historical research that has been intelligently wrested from the feasible, which also reveals what has been lost in the historical film snippets. The greatest deficiency is perhaps an almost idealistic conception of the women's movement beyond the other political developments, which obscures some contexts of understanding. "

- Silvia Hallensleben : epd film

"Of course it is interesting that the forgotten origin of the women's movement began with the concern to change society in such a way that women can give birth to children in it without being disadvantaged and it is even more interesting to look at the present. in which giving birth to children is still a career turnaround for women. The decline in the birth rate speaks for itself - the childbirth strike threatened by women in the 1970s occurred without being named as such. But one does not want to see the women's movement, which has not yet achieved its goal but has brought women a long way further, reduced to the issue of children. The topic is more complex, but this complexity is not considered in this essay. "

- Dagmar Trüpschuch : Lespress December / January 2005/06

“All the young women, to whom Sander wanted to show the true beauty of the women's movement, will probably switch off at the latest when the film moves further and further away from the question raised at the beginning. It is the 'lesbian movement', Alice Schwarzer and the men who are to blame for the fact that the child issue took a back seat. Real analysis should have asked why it was so convenient to settle into indictment mode and whether there was a political alternative to it. But instead one is now debating on TV round level through all other topics of the movement, from children's shops to the Catholic Church to reproductive medicine, and lo and behold, the positions of the women's movement are all still relevant. Great. Only those who you finally wanted to show that, have not been watching for a long time. "
