Miyabes maple ( Acer miyabei ) is a small tree in the genus maple in the soap tree family (Sapindaceae). The natural range is in Japan and China.

Miyabe's maple is a 10 to 12 tree, rarely up to 25 meters high, with a round crown, rough and corky bark and hairy shoots when old . The leaves are five-lobed, 10 to 15 centimeters wide, with a deep heart-shaped base. The lobes are blunt or pointed, the middle lobe is cut to the middle of the blade or a little deeper and narrows towards the base. The upper side of the leaf is dark green, the underside light green, both sides are softly hairy. The petiole is also hairy and releases milky sap when injured. The yellowish-green, about 1 centimeter wide, thin-stalked flowers are long in 10 to 12 centimeters and 5 to 7 centimeters wide cymes . They bloom in May. The fruits are 4 to 5 centimeters long and have velvety hairs. The wing is spread horizontally.

Distribution and ecology

The distribution area is on the Japanese islands of Hokkaidō and Honshū and in the Chinese provinces of Gansu , Henan , Hubei , Shaanxi and Zhejiang . The species grows in floodplains and on river banks on moderately dry, fresh to moist, very nutrient-rich, neutral to alkaline, sandy-gravelly soils in sunny to light-shaded, cool to cold locations.
