Monemvasia (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The white wine variety Monemvasia is native to the Greek islands of Evia , sporadically on almost all Aegean islands , Paros , Ios , Sikinos , the Cyclades and the regions of Laconia and Macedonia .

For a long time the variety was wrongly considered to be the original form of all Malvasia vines. However, the misunderstanding probably stems from the fact that a wine called Malvasia was exported from the hinterland of the city of Monemvasia in the 13th century . During the Venetian rule in the Greek region, the city of Monemvasia was partly called "Napoli di Malvosia" and the name of the grape variety of the same name probably also changed. According to the publications of the ampelograph Logothetis, the Malvasia wine of that time consisted, in addition to the Monemvasia vine, mainly of the varieties Aidani Mavro , Aidani Aspro , Athiri , Thrapsathiri , Vilana , Ladikinoand Liatiko .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is slightly hairy with white wool. The pale green young leaves are only slightly hairy.
  • The large leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stalk bay is lyre-shaped open (sometimes closed). The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth have a medium distance in comparison to the grape varieties.
  • The conical to cylindrical grape is large and loose berries. The slightly elliptical berries are also large and golden to amber in color. The berries have an aromatic taste.

The late growing grape variety ripens approx. 15 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen early within the white grape varieties. In Greece it can usually be harvested around August 15th.

Synonyms

The Monemvasia grape variety is also known under the names Artemisi, Klossaria (in Rhodes), Monemvasitiko, Monemvassia, Monemvassi, Monemvassiatiko and Monovasia.
