Monique Riekewald

Monique Riekewald (born August 3, 1978 in Suhl ) is a former German skeleton pilot .

Monique Riekewald from Zella-Mehlis from BSR Rennsteig Oberhof has been an active skeleton pilot since 1997. The sports soldier is studying business administration at the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences . Since the 1998/99 season, Riekewald has started in the senior division. In her first season she was second in the German championships (DM) and 13th in the overall World Cup. In the next season she was again second in the DM and 11th in the overall World Cup and eighth at the World Championships in Innsbruck . In the 2000/01 season she was the first German champion in Königssee , seventh in the overall World Cup and at the World Championships in Calgary .

In 2003 she became the first female European champion in the first ever continental title fights in St. Moritz and eighth of the world championships. The following season she was third in the German Championships and fourth in the Second European Championships. The 2004/05 season was also successful. In addition to another third place at the DM and another fourth place at the European Championships, Riekewald was ninth in the overall World Cup and fifth at the World Championships. At the 2007 Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships in St. Moritz, Riekewald became world champion in the team competition, which was held for the first time, together with Frank Kleber , Karl Angerer , Marc Kühne , Sandra Kiriasis and Berit Wiacker .

The only 1.60 meter tall athlete came through several other sports and was inspired by a one-year stay abroad to play skeleton. After her return she was the first female skeleton pilot at the elite sports school in Oberhof , where she pioneered this sport. Riekewald practiced her sport professionally. Due to not achieved targets, which were set by the association, she was sorted out from the national squad before the 2008/09 season and then ended her career.
