The Curse of Monkey Iceland is a point-and-click adventure from Lucasfilm Games and the third part of the Monkey Iceland - computer game series . It was released in October 1997.

action

At the beginning of the game, Guybrush Threepwood escaped from the mystical Big Whoop, but is sitting helplessly in the sea in a bumper car. He is finally washed up in the port of Plunder Island, where he suddenly finds himself in a battle between his adored Elaine and the ghost pirate LeChuck. The latter besieges the island on which Elaine is now governor. Guybrush overhears a dialogue between LeChuck and Elaine in which the latter implies that she is still in love with Guybrush. He is subsequently noticed by LeChuck and taken prisoner, but Guybrush manages to blow up the ship, which results in LeChuck's death. Back on land, Guybrush proposes marriage to Elaine, handing her a diamond ring that he found on LeChuck's ship. But the ring carries a voodoo curse and turns Elaine into a gold statue, which is stolen by pirates shortly afterwards.

Guybrush learns from an old friend, the Voodoolady, that he needs a large, not cursed diamond ring to lift the curse and that he can find it on Blood Island. So he recruits a crew, gets a ship and regains possession of Elaine's statue. He also finds a map that should show him the way to Blood Island. On the way, Guybrush's card is stolen by the pirate Röchelieu (originally Rottingham). He succeeds in defeating this in a fencing match and thus getting the card back. Guybrush and his crew then sail to Blood Island. There Guybrush takes possession of the ring and the uncursed diamond and can break the curse by replacing the cursed diamond ring with the uncursed diamond.

However, LeChuck has again managed to defy death and return as a demon zombie. Guybrush and Elaine are captured by the ghost pirate as soon as they reunite and taken to LeChuck's Big Whoop amusement park , the sole purpose of which is to bring new recruits to LeChuck's army of the dead. There Guybrush is given a curse again, from which he can quickly free himself. He manages to cause an explosion in the park, which LeChuck buries under the rubble of his own ghost train and tons of ice. In the end, Guybrush and Elaine, who are now married, set off on their honeymoon. However, a short scene that follows the credits suggests that LeChuck will return in another game.

Game principle and technology

The Curse of Monkey Island is a point-and-click adventure. From Sprites composite characters act before hand-drawn, some animated scenes. The player can use the mouse to move his character through the locations and use the mouse buttons to initiate actions that allow the character to interact with his environment. Guybrush can find objects and apply them to the environment or other objects as well as communicate with non-player characters . As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked.

LucasArts used as in the two previous games, the SCUMM - Engine for the creation of the game, but developed the user interface further: Instead of a control menus directly on the screen, from which you could choose command verbs and inventory items, entered into a similar form in full throttle inserted , context-sensitive cursor in the form of a coin-shaped menu that can be called up with a long left-click and that contains commands for interacting with the game world. In this way, by eliminating the rigid menu, there was more space on the screen for displaying the game world.

  • Graphics: full screen, comic- style SVGA
  • The game has two levels of difficulty ( normal and upper-level ), which differ in the number and level of difficulty of the puzzles.

Production notes

In the German version of the game, as in other translations, a section at the beginning of the second CD in which Guybrush's crew sings the song "A Pirate I Was Meant to Be" is missing. The player has to get the crew to stop singing. But with each attempt, the crew starts a new verse that rhymes with the player's sentence. That goes on until he says a sentence that ends with the word "Orange", which the crew doesn't know how to rhyme with, and ends the song. Since the entire section is based on English rhymes that are performed to match the melody of the song, it has been removed from the non-English language versions of the game.

In March 2018, the new rights holder Disney Interactive published a version of the game that can run on modern PCs via the distribution platforms Steam and GOG .
