Toronto-Express class is the name of three on the South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in Okpo-built Panamax - container ships of the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd and the shipping company OOCL . The Toronto Express class consists of the Toronto Express and Montreal Express , which entered service in 2003. Another identical ship, which was also built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and put into service in 2003, is the OOCL Montreal of the Orient Overseas Container Line in Hong Kong. OOCL runs the ship together with the significantly smaller OOCL Belgium as the OOCL ICE class .

The Toronto Express class ships belong to a company belonging to Hapag-Lloyd and are operated by Anglo-Eastern Ship Management Ltd. in Hong Kong bereedert . Both ships sail under the flag of Great Britain with their home port in London .

history

The ships used by Hapag-Lloyd today were built for the Canadian company Canmar Maritime and put into service as Canmar Venture (now Toronto Express ) and Canmar Spirit (now Montreal Express ). Canmar Maritime was taken over by CP Ships in the mid-1990s , which in turn were taken over by Hapag-Lloyd at the end of 2005.

The ships were specially built for use on the lower St. Lawrence Seaway and were the largest container ships in this high ice class when they were put into service. Together with the sister ship OOCL Montreal , the trio was initially used in the Gateway Express service (GEX) and later on other liner services between Europe and the ports on the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

technology

The ships have superstructures about four fifths aft above the propulsion system. One hold is behind the deckhouse, the rest in front. The cargo holds, which are equipped with cell guides , are accessible via a total of 17 hatches and are closed by McGregor pontoon hatch covers. The container capacity is 4402 TEU and 330 refrigerated container connections are available. Own loading harness was not installed.

The main drive consists of an 8K90MC-C eight-cylinder marine diesel engine from the Danish company MAN B&W Diesel A / S with an output of 37,275  kW , which acts directly on a fixed propeller. The ships can thus reach speeds of up to 23  knots . The energy supply is ensured by three auxiliary diesels and one emergency diesel. A bow and stern thruster are available to support the berthing and casting off maneuvers .
