Moriarty is a city with a status of City in Torrance County in the US state of New Mexico .

geography

At a distance of 50 kilometers west of Moriarty is Albuquerque . Santa Fe is 70 kilometers to the north. The Interstate 40 highway runs through the middle of the city and replaces the former Route 66 in this section .

history

Moriarty owes its name to the Iowa settler Michael Timothy Moriarty, who settled in the region with his family in 1887 and initially ran a small ranch . When in 1903 the Santa Fe Central Railroad , which was later taken over by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , built a railway line through the town and created a depot, the population grew. However, railway operations were stopped after a few years. In 1937, the Route 66 road link from Albuquerque to Santa Rosa was also led by Moriarty, but replaced by the I-40 in the 1960s .

Today Moriarty is active in agriculture and tourism and organizes parades, rodeos , mud-bogging competitions with monster trucks , soaring and a pinto bean festival every October .
