Moritz Gustav von Baranoff (Евстафий Евстафьевич Баранов; born February 7, 1790 in Pergel, Raasiku municipality , Estonia governorate ; † April 9, 1845 in Mogilev , Mogilev governorate ) was a Baltic nobleman and lieutenant general in the Russian army .

Life

In 1806 he began his military service in the hunters' troops as Praporschtschik . As a Russian officer he was deployed from 1812 to 1814 in the war against the French in the Russian campaign in 1812 . He then continued his service in the infantry and was promoted to colonel in 1824 . In 1830 he was promoted to major general and was commander of a large unit during the November uprising in the campaign against the Poles in 1831 . In 1840 he was promoted to lieutenant general, previously he was commander of the 2nd Infantry Division from 1837 to 1840 and commanded the 11th Infantry Division from 1840 to 1845. He died on March 9, 1845 in Mahiljou. For particularly loyal service and bravery , he was awarded the Russian Order of St. George (4th grade) in 1829 and the Golden Sword for bravery in 1831 .

Origin and family

Moritz Gustav came from the Russian-Baltic-Swedish noble family von Baranoff . His father was the district administrator Klaus Gustav von Baranoff (1753-1814), who was married to Eleonora Christina Freiin Gyllenstjerna af Lundholm (1759-1800). Moritz married Johanna Juliane von Baranoff adh Poidiser (1800–1870) in 1824, their sons were the Russian lieutenant general Nikolai Karl von Baranoff (1825–1903) and Alexander von Baranoff (1837–1905).
