Morning Glory (ship, 1995)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Morning Glory , Capricorno since 2005 , is a Reichel Pugh 80 IMS ILC Maxi maxi yacht .

The boat

The boat was designed in 1995 as an ocean racing yacht on behalf of and for the account of the German entrepreneur Hasso Plattner , founder of the SAP company , by the yacht designers Reichel / Pugh in San Diego ( California ) and by the boat builders McConaghy in Mona Vale, Sydney ( Australia ) built. The boat is rigged as a sloop . With a length of 24 m, a width of 5.44 m and a draft of 4.20 m (the keel is fixed), as a racing yacht it had a water displacement of 25 tons.

Plattner sold the boat in 2004 after replacing it with his new Morning Glory , a MaxZ86 also designed by Reichel / Pugh and built by McConaghy. The new owner was the Milanese pharmaceutical entrepreneur Rinaldo Del Bono, who won the Admiral's Cup for Italy in 1995 . He gave the boat the new name Capricorno - like all his boats before - and had it radically rebuilt by Indiana Yachting in Scarlino . The mast and rigging were renewed, a new keel fitted and a new diesel engine installed. At the same time, the once relatively spartan interior was redesigned into a more comfortable cruiser yacht according to plans by Nauta Yachts. 18 months and 2 million euros later, the boat was three tons heavier than before. It now had space for six people in an owner's suite and two guest cabins, all with air conditioning , as well as additional bunk beds for a crew of two in a separate cabin. Three toilets with shower, a salon with couch, armchairs and dining table for eight people and a large galley have also been part of the equipment since then.

In 2010 modernizations were carried out again. In addition to a new mast, the boat received a new 4-cylinder Yanmar diesel engine of the type 4LHA-HTP with 118 kW (160 HP) output, which enables a cruising speed of 10 knots via one screw . 1050 liters of diesel fuel can be carried.

The boat was put up for sale in 2013 at a price of 1.9 million euros.

Racing successes

In January 1996, Plattner won the Cape Town Rio Regatta (Cape 2 Rio) with the new boat in a record time of 14 days, 14 hours and 52 minutes. In December of the same year the boat won the Sydney-Hobart Regatta in a record time of 2 days, 14 hours, 7 minutes and 10 seconds, which is still valid today (2014). However, there was a streak of bad luck between these two successes, with mast breaks on the second day of the Kenwood Cup regatta in Hawaii and on the penultimate day of the Rolex Big Boat Series in San Francisco Bay . Shortly before the Sydney-Hobart race, the top six meters of the mast broke off during training in front of Sydney. In 1997 the boat won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup off Porto Cervo ( Sardinia ).

After the sale and conversion, the Capricorno was no longer a racing boat, but took part in the 2006 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) from Las Palmas to St. Lucia . She won the race in a record time of 11 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes and 30 seconds, which was not undercut again until 2013.
