The Morning Glory is a so-called super maxi yacht of the MaxZ86 type.

Construction and technical data

The ocean racing yacht was designed in 2003 on behalf of and for the account of the German entrepreneur Hasso Plattner , founder of the company SAP , by the yacht designers Reichel / Pugh in San Diego ( California ) and by the boat builders McConaghy in Mona Vale, Sydney ( Australia ) built.

The 26.2 m long and 4.80 m wide sloop - rigged boat is made of carbon and has a flat hull with a wide stern ( maxi sled ), a tilting keel and two movable keel fins. This keel construction, which was new at the time, was called CBTF = Canting Ballast Twin Foil . The boat displaces 20.8 tons, of which almost 10 tons are accounted for by the keel bomb located 4.5 m below the waterline . Up to 5 tons of water ballast can be taken to stabilize the boat.

The boat is registered with the Kiel Yacht Club. It has the sailing number GER 5386 and for regatta sailing the General Purpose Handicap 366.1 of the ORC International Measurement . It was sailed by Plattner and in 2013 also by his daughter Kristina in international offshore races.

The boat has been on sale for 1.5 million euros since the end of 2013.

Racing successes

In 2004, the Morning Glory won the 647 nautical miles long Newport-Bermuda Race from Newport (Rhode Island) to Hamilton ( Bermuda ) and improved the previous record by five hours. In 2005 she won the Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac) over 2225 nautical miles from Los Angeles to Honolulu , also with a new record time . In 2006 she won the Rolex Middle Sea Race in the Mediterranean, and in 2007 the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup , the most prestigious sailing trophy for large yachts worldwide. In 2013 Kristina Plattner won the Rolex Middle Sea Race with the Morning Glory .
