The motel is a 40 kilometer long tributary of the Schilde in western Mecklenburg.

The name motel comes from the Old Slavic word motiti se for moving lively .

It rises south of the district of Harst, which belongs to the municipality of Wittendörper, on the western slope of the Vorderster Berg elevation (56.4 m above sea  level ), near the A 24 . From there it runs first in a northerly direction. To the west of Hülseburg it first forms the western border of a mixed forest area, after which it flows through a quarry forest with moist subsoil. Between Luckwitz and Schossin, the small river bends to the west and then flows through Dreilützow, where the direction of flow changes to the southwest. With Wittenburg the only town is reached along the river. After that, the motel flows west to Ziggelmark over and pass under the highway 24. Here, the 585-hectare begins the conservation area Schilde- and motel lowlands . After a short stretch in which the river forms a meander , Lehsen and then a coniferous forest area flow through. In the Vellahner district of Camin, the motel joins the Schilde .

Tributaries are the Nagelsbach and drainage ditches. The motel drains into the North Sea via Schilde, Schaale , Sude and Elbe .

The motel that flows into the shields has no connection with the river of the same name east of Lake Schwerin, which flows into the Warnow at a relatively short distance .
