The Shishaldin is a stratovolcano and is located almost in the center of Unimak Island in the Eastern Aleutian Islands . The closest village is False Pass , 32 km northeast of the volcano.

Summit height and name

The symmetrical cone reaches a height of 2857 m , making it the highest peak in the island chain. The original name Sisquk was given to the volcano by the indigenous people of the Aleutians and means "the mountain that shows me the way when I get lost"

Eruptions

Eruption in April 1999

A small summit crater constantly produces a small but intense cloud of steam and a little ash every now and then. No less than 24 parasitic craters sit on its flanks.

Shishaldin is one of the most active volcanoes in the Alëuten arches with at least 27 eruptions since 1775. The last eruption phase took place in 2020. The outbreaks are often explosive, but Strombolian activity also occurs. The flank craters have produced numerous lava flows .
