Mount Vernon is a city in the American state of Ohio . It is the county seat of Knox County .

geography

Mount Vernon is located in central Ohio, in the northeastern United States. The Kokosing River and US Highway 36 run through the urban area.

history

The city was founded in 1805 by Joseph Walker, Thomas B. Patterson and Benjamin Butler. Mount Vernon was named after the country residence of the same name of the first President of the United States, George Washington . The city's first residents came from the states of Virginia , Maryland , New Jersey, and Pennsylvania . Three years later, in 1808, Knox County was established.

In 1851 the Woodward Opera House opened, which is now considered the oldest free-standing opera house in the United States.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 1833 the mechanical engineering company Cooper Industries was founded in Mount Vernon , today one of the oldest large companies still in existence in the USA. Another resident company is Rolls-Royce Energy Systems, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce .
