The Moy or River Moy ( Irish An Mhuaidh or Abhainn na Muaidhe ) is a 99 km long river in western Ireland .
The River Moy rises at Knocknashee in the Ox Mountains in Irish County Sligo and first flows in a southwesterly direction. A few kilometers northeast of Swinford , which lies on one of its tributaries, it crosses the border with County Mayo , in which the River Moy flows for the most part. At the level of Lough Cullin , which it connects with Lough Conn and both with the Atlantic, the Moy turns north and flows through Foxford and Ballina over Killala Bay into the Atlantic .
The Moy was one of the best salmon fishing grounds in Europe; However , offshore driftnet fishing has caused a sharp decline in the number of returning fish (over 100,000 salmon were driftnet off the west coast of Ireland in 2005). Since January 2007, driftnet fishing for salmon has been banned.
