Mr. Moto and the Mysterious Island (Original title: Mr. Moto in Danger Island ) is a 1939 crime film by Herbert I. Leeds . This is the seventh film in the series in the eight-part series about the Japanese detective Mr. Kentaro Moto portrayed by Peter Lorre . The character of Mr. Moto is based on the character created by John P. Marquand ; the story of the film is based on the novel Murder in Trinidad by John W. Vandercook.

action

Mr. Moto is assigned to smash a diamond smuggler's ring in Puerto Rico. Shortly before his arrival, he befriends the wrestler Twister and fakes an attack of illness. When the smugglers try to kidnap him in the ambulance, it is clear that the gang has learned of Mr. Moto's assignment. The trail now leads into mysterious swamps, in which the ghost of an old pirate is supposed to roam. In order to gain the bandits' trust, Mr. Moto claims he is really a gangster.

criticism

The film received mixed reviews; the German film service wrote: "The master detective receives a funny American catcher as an assistant, which means that the weak seventh adventure of the crime series doesn't get a whistle either."

background

Vandercook's story was filmed in 1934 and subsequently served as a template for a Charlie Chan film.
