Muʿādh al-Kasāsba
Muʿādh Sāfī Yūsif al-Kasāsba ( Arabic معاذ صافي يوسف الكساسبة, DMG Muʿāḏ Ṣāfī Yūsif al-Kasāsba ; born on May 29, 1988 in Kerak ; probably died on January 3, 2015 ) was a Jordanian fighter pilot . He was captured by the terrorist organization Islamic State after his crash and burned alive.
Life
Al-Kasāsba was a first lieutenant in the Jordanian Air Force . He graduated from King Hussein Air College in 2009 and qualified as a fighter pilot in 2012. He was married to Anwar Tarawneh. His father, Ṣāfī al-Kasāsba, worked as a school principal and is the sheikh of a prominent Sunni tribe, the Barārša in southern Jordan, who support the Hashimite monarchy .
On December 24, 2014, during a combat mission by the international coalition against ISIS , he crashed with an F-16 (from former Dutch stocks) over ar-Raqqa in northern Syria . With the ejection seat he landed in the Euphrates and was immediately taken prisoner by IS.
In January 2015, an exchange against the terrorist Sadschida al-Rishawi was negotiated. However, Jordan demanded proof that the hostage was still alive. If the pilot were killed, Jordan threatened the execution of all IS supporters imprisoned in Jordan.
On February 3, 2015, a video was published showing al-Kasāsba being fully conscious and killed by burning in an iron cage after his clothes were doused with gasoline. Jordanian state television reported that the murder happened on January 3, 2015.
Reactions
The Jordanian King Abdullah II bin al-Hussein announced a “merciless war” against IS after angry protests by the population. As an immediate reaction, the Jordanian authorities established already in 2006 as a terrorist to death sentenced Sajida Mubarak Atrous al-Rishawi the early morning of February 4, 2015 by hanging out. Iraqi al-Qaeda terrorist Ziyad Karboli, who was also sentenced to death by a court, was executed in the same manner shortly afterwards.
Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) commented:
“It was with great horror that I heard the terrible news of the murder of the Jordanian pilot [...]. It is unbelievable that people are capable of such a cruel act. "
Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) stated:
“We are deeply shaken by the murder of the Jordanian pilot [...] by the barbaric terrorist hordes of ISIS. Should the video of his hideous death prove to be authentic, it would be beyond human imagination. "
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzō Abe condemned the murder as "unforgivable and shocking". UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spoke of a "terrible act". US President Barack Obama announced that the anti-IS coalition would double its “vigilance and determination”.
US Secretary of State John Kerry described the burning of the Jordanian pilot as a "new dimension of depravity" and announced that he would act relentlessly against terrorist groups such as IS.
The Fox broadcaster came under fire for posting the full 22-minute video, including four minutes with the pilot on fire, on the Internet. The United Arab Emirates suspended their flight operations and demanded that the US station V-22 Osprey helicopters to protect downed pilots.
Shortly after the video was released by ISIS, many Jordanians demanded retaliation for the burning of the pilot. As a first reaction, Jordan had two terrorists who had already been sentenced to death immediately executed. The father of the victim, Ṣafī al-Kasāsba, also demanded retribution with the words:
“I call on the Arab states and the coalition to wipe out ISIS. My son's blood has not yet been atoned for. "
