Ferries operate from Port Mòr to the islands of Canna , Rum and Eigg as well as Mallaig and Arisaig on the Scottish mainland.

The highest hill on the island is the 137 meter high Beinn Airein . Muck is known for large seal colonies and harbor porpoises in the surrounding waters.

The Gaelic name Eilean nam Muc means "island of whales". Occasionally the name is also interpreted as the "island of pigs" ( muc : pig). The word Muc is a short form of muc-mhara ( German  "whale" ).

prehistory

Early island history is obscure, but there are some clues. A Mesolithic settlement on Rum suggests that the much more fertile Muck was also an inhabited island. The earliest artifacts on Muck are a thumbnail scraper and two flint blades, believed to be Neolithic . The Bronze Age is represented by a dagger found in 1920 while draining a bog. There are also a number of Bronze Age burial sites. Caistel nan Duin Bhan in the north of the harbor is a long-used Iron Age hill fort . A house floor plan is located in the walled area. The early Christian period is represented by two crosses on the cemetery called Kiel or A 'Chill, which seems to be associated with Finnan, a contemporary of Columba on Iona . Dail Chill Fionain is the ancient name of a field now known as Lagabholla.
