Muktsar is a district in the northern Indian state of Punjab .

The area is 2593 km². The administrative seat is the city of Muktsar .

history

The Muktsar District was established in 1995 from parts of the Faridkot District .

population

The population is 901,896 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 16.0%. Muktsar has a gender ratio of 896 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 65.81% in 2011, an increase of almost 7 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 70.8% of the population are Sikhs , 28.3% are Hindus , 0.5% are Muslims , 0.2% are Christians and 0.1% stated no religious affiliation.

Almost 28.0% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Muktsar with 116,747 inhabitants.
