Mother and Child is a German feature film by Carl Froelich from 1924 based on a poem by Friedrich Hebbel . The first performance took place on November 13, 1924 in the Berlin Marble House .

action

Senator Hansen is a wealthy, respected Bremen businessman. His son has died and he now has no heir to his company and his fortune. His cook Lene and his coachman Christian are a young couple, but without financial means. Senator Hansen comes up with the idea of ​​a way out of his need. He signs a contract with them that bequeaths the first child of their marriage to him and thus an heir. The young couple received a farm that they owned only when Lene gave birth to a child that would then belong to Senator Hansen. Some time later, Lene becomes pregnant and gives birth to a child that she no longer wants to give up. Lene flees with a raft on the rapid hall . She almost dies with her child in the rapids , but can be rescued in dire need. Senator Hansen now recognizes his inhuman behavior and allows the parents to keep the child. Lene and Christian also own the farm.

The silent film had its world premiere on November 13, 1924 in Berlin. The film was a huge box office success at home and abroad. On the basis of this financial success, Carl Froelich and Henny Porten founded their film production company Henny Porten-Froelich Produktion GmbH and made fifteen films together by 1929 that made Henny Porten the most popular German silent film star.

In 1933 a sound film remake was made under the direction of Hans Steinhoff . Henny Porten also starred in this film.
