Hong Myung-bo (born February 12, 1969 in Seoul , South Korea ) is a South Korean football coach and former player .

His greatest sporting success was reaching fourth place at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Hong himself was the captain of the South Korean team and was awarded the bronze ball for the third best player of the tournament after the tournament . After the tournament he resigned from the national team and is still the record player for his country with 135 international matches .

He also took part in the soccer world championships in 1990 , 1994 and 1998 and scored a goal each against Germany and Spain in 1994 .

He ended his playing career in 2004. In 2004, Hong was included in the list of the 125 best living footballers ( FIFA 100 ) by Pelé .

In 2012, he led the Olympic team to the first bronze medal for South Korean soccer players at the Olympic Games. Since June 2013 he has been the national coach of the South Korean national soccer team. He resigned from this post after the team's disappointing performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in July 2014. In 2016 he signed a contract with Hangzhou Nabel Greentown as the club's new coach.
