The Nördliche Hardt area lies entirely in the FFH area No. 6916-342 Hardtwald between Graben and Karlsruhe and in the EU bird protection area No. 6916-441 Hardtwald north of Karlsruhe .

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose according to the Protected Area Ordinance is to preserve the largest contiguous forest area in the urban district of Karlsruhe in its diversity, character and beauty as a self-contained habitat of animal and plant communities of the beech-oak forest and its subsequent types on the lower terrace. At the same time, an excellent recreational area, which includes the culturally and historically significant facilities of the castle garden and the pheasant garden with the goat bare skin in the immediate vicinity of the city, should be sustainably secured. At the same time, the protected area essentially serves to support urban ecological functions, such as climate control, air regeneration, and immission reduction, and is at the same time a retreat for the flora and fauna that have largely been displaced from the urban area.
