The FFH area Hardtwald between Graben and Karlsruhe is a protected area (protected area identifier DE-7116-341) in the German state of Baden- which was registered in 2005 by the Karlsruhe Regional Council according to Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) Württemberg . With the ordinance of the regional council of Karlsruhe on the definition of areas of community importance of October 12, 2018, the protected area was established.

The contiguous FFH area of around 4,729 hectares belongs to the natural area 223- Hardtebenen within the natural spatial main unit 22- Northern Upper Rhine Lowland . It lies between Karlsruhe and Graben-Neudorf and extends over the markings of five cities and municipalities.

Description and purpose of protection

Largest contiguous forest area on drift sand and inland dunes in the Karlsruhe agglomeration. These are large-scale oak and oak-hornbeam forests and animal communities adapted to them. There is a gravel pit with rich submerged vegetation in the area. The Hardtwald is a traditional forest area with historical secondary uses such as pig fattening, litter removal, etc., as well as a traditional recreational forest. The most important area for the goat milker in Baden-Württemberg.

Contiguous protected areas

The FFH area is contiguous. It almost completely overlaps with the landscape protection areas 2.12.005- Nördliche Hardt and 2.15.014- Hardtwald north of Karlsruhe and with the bird sanctuary no. 6916-441 Hardtwald north of Karlsruhe . The nature reserve 2074- Kohlplattenschlag lies within the area .
