The FFH area Hardtwald between Karlsruhe and Muggensturm is a protected area (protected area identifier DE-7116-341) registered in 2005 by the Karlsruhe regional council in accordance with Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive ) in the German state of Baden- Württemberg . With the ordinance of the regional council of Karlsruhe on the definition of areas of community importance of October 12, 2018, the protected area was established.
location
The contiguous FFH area of around 2,174 hectares belongs to the natural area 223- Hardtebenen within the natural spatial main unit 22- Northern Upper Rhine Lowland . It lies between Karlsruhe and Muggensturm and extends over the markings of six cities and municipalities.

- Malsch : 369.602 ha = 17%
- Rheinstetten : 934.8757 ha = 43%
Rastatt district:
- Bietigheim : 217.4129 ha = 10%
- Durmersheim : 152.189 ha = 7%
Description and purpose of protection
It is the largest contiguous forest area on drift sand and inland dunes in the Karlsruhe agglomeration with large oak and oak-hornbeam forests and animal communities adapted to them. There is a gravel pit with rich submerged vegetation in the area. The Hardtwald is a traditional forest area with historical secondary uses such as pig fattening, litter removal, etc., as well as a traditional recreational forest. The most important area for the goat milker in Baden-Württemberg.

Contiguous protected areas
The FFH area consists of seven sub-areas. It is partially congruent with the landscape protection areas 2.12.015 Südliche Hardt , 2.15.015- Hardtwald south of Karlsruhe and 2.15.055- Hardtwald near Ettlingen and Rheinstetten . Parts of the nature reserve 2203- Allmendäcker lie within the area .
