The FFH area Rheinniederung and Hardtebene between Lichtenau and Iffezheim is a protected area (protected area identifier DE-7114-311) in the German state registered in 2015 by the Karlsruhe Regional Council in accordance with Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) Baden-Württemberg . From 2005 to 2015 there were two areas, namely the Rhine lowlands from Lichtenau to Iffezheim as well as rough grassland and forests between Sandweier and Stollhofen . The LUBW merged the two areas in 2015, whereby the protected areas have practically not changed. With the ordinance of the regional council of Karlsruhe on the definition of areas of community importance of October 12, 2018, the protected area was established.

The approximately 2,846 hectares large FFH area is one of the natural areas 210- Offenburg Rhine valley , 222- Northern Upper Rhine valley and 223- Hardt levels within the geography major units 21- Middle Upper Rhine lowland and 22- Northern Upper Rhine lowlands . It lies between Lichtenau and the Rastatt district of Wintersdorf along the Rhine and extends over the markings of five cities and communities.

Description and purpose of protection

It is an area in the Rhine lowlands with habitat types of outstanding quality. Significant occurrence of lowland grass grass and silver grass fields. Especially south of the Iffezheim barrage, structured forests, softwood floodplains, migratory fish stocks, historical and in some cases still current meadow use on gravel ridges. Former floodplain, inland dune area on ice age low terrace. Remains of acidic beech and oak forests.
