The landscape protection area is located in the Karlsruhe mountainside zone northeast of Grötzingen between federal highways 3 and 293 to the city limits opposite the Pfinztal community . The area consists of species-rich beech forests on loess and loess loam over shell limestone soils in near-natural characteristics. It is a cultural landscape of high ecological importance. The small-scale uses and landscape elements with fields, fresh meadows - semi-arid grassland, numerous fallow land of various ages, hedges, woodlands, caves, rock heads and ledges - form habitats for numerous types of endangered animal and plant species. As a local recreation area, the area is punctually polluted by car traffic in feeder ravines and requires a lot of maintenance.

The Knittelberg in the south of the protected area reaches a height of 222 meters. On it are the remains of a defensive bunker. The Knittelberghaus, a nature lovers house with overnight accommodation, is located in the Reithohl street. The highest point is the Silzberg with a height of 246 meters.

The Grötzingen landfill, which has been closed since 1997, is located within the nature reserve.
